NEW FOR 2009!

The French Republican Wall Calendar 2009

In 1793, the French replaced the old calendar, tainted with irrational religious holidays, with a new rational calendar. The months were named after natural phenomena (Winter consists of Foggy, Frosty and Snowy), and each day was dedicated to a plant, animal or tool. I’ve been using this calendar for two years, and I’m delighted by the way the plants in the calendar show up in my life. I’m pleased that a calendar created two centuries ago in France matches so well with the seasonal changes I experience in Seattle in the 21st century.

The wall calendar I’ve created for 2009 is divided into the Gregorian calendar months (of January, etc.) but is illustrated with stunning photographs of seasonal landscapes that correspond with the FRC themes and shows the items to honor on each day.

This year’s calendar features the work of free-lance photographer, Catherine Kerr, who records the seasonal changes in the landscape where she lives: the eastern Ontario highlands. You can appreciate her talent even more by viewing her blog:

Thanks to the brave pioneers who signed up for the Natural Planning Journal last year, I’ve developed a better understanding of how to help you discern your goals, dreams and themes for the year, and pursue them through the year. The Journal has become a series of e-books, which are workbooks providing you with questions, exercises, suggestions and pages you can use to follow your dreams.

Thirteen Christmas Cookies

Thirteen Christmas Cookies
This little book offers recipes for making thirteen traditional cookies, served during the winter holidays, in the Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Scandinavia, Italy and Denmark. You will find recipes for making Kourabiedes, Springerle, Cavallucci, Speculatius, gingerbread, Advent pretzels, Lussekatter (Lucy Cats) Twelfth Night Cake and more. Each recipe includes an explanation of the deep historical roots of the cookie, including its symbolism, use in rituals and association with winter gods and goddesses.

It was my friend, Helen Farias, who first told me that you should bake thirteen different kinds of Christmas cookies during Advent. Even though I had never heard of this before (or since), I knew instantly that she was right. Perhaps she derived her idea from the custom in Southern France of serving 13 desserts after Mass on Christmas Eve. At any rate, if you make 3 batches of cookies a week during the four weeks of Advent (plus an extra batch one week), you will have 13 kinds of cookies ready for serving at Christmas or giving away as gifts, plus plenty to serve at your Advent gatherings.

Calendar Companion: Closing the Door on the Old Year

An old New Year's carol sings about the fair maid with gold upon her chin who opens up the eastern door to let the new year in. But in the same carol, there's also a fair maid with gold upon her toe who opens up the western door to let the old year go.

In this first year of the new year, before we resume our work lives after the merriment of the Twelve Days of Christmas (which ends on January 6), what can you do that will symbolically close the door on the past year?

You might do something as simple as donating your old computer to charity or dropping off that bag of cast-off clothes at the nearest Goodwill. You could do something symbolic like write a letter to the old year in your journal, perhaps after lighting a candle. Or you might choose something more ambitious like putting away the photographs you took during the year into a photo album or making a list of the art works or stories you created during the year.

Whatever you choose, set aside sufficient time so you can do it with grace and leisure. Write it into your schedule now.
